TIPS, HINTS, AND NOTES
~Information on this page is intended to help you with your homework and study for quizzes and exams.

I will try to cut and paste latest info to the top as we cover new topics.

ADDING INTEGERS WITH LIKE SIGNS: (pos. + pos. or neg. + neg.)
ADD the numbers, then keep the sign of the two numbers.
  ex. 1)  -5 + -3 = -8                  ex. 2) +4 + (+5) = +9

-----------------------------------------

ADDING INTEGERS WITH DIFFERENT SIGNS:
SUBTRACT the numbers and use the sign of the "larger number"  (by larger we mean if there was no sign attached)  (What do we have more of?  Negative or Positive?)
  ex. 1)  -5 + 8 = 3         ex. 2)  8 + (-12) = -4

----------------------------------------

SUBTRACTING INTEGERS:

ADD THE OPPOSITE
1.  Leave the first number alone
2.  Change the subtraction to addition
3.  Change the second number to its opposite
4.  Add
ex. 1)  -2 - 6 =                                  ex. 2)  7 - (-13) =
           -2 + (-6) = -8                                    7 + 13 = 20

------------------------------------------

ABSOLUTE VALUE:
The distance a number is from zero.
| 5 | is read as "the absolute value of 5" and it equals 5.
| -5 | is read as "the absolute value of negative 5" and it equals 5.
