Back To Cohocton School

October 2010
Dear Wayland-Cohocton Families,

Happy October! The leaves are falling, the temperature is changing and the conversation in the hallway has gone from summer vacation stories to Halloween costume plans! Sniffles are replacing sunburns and new sneakers are covered with the “fall mud” that fills our recess yard after the rain! There is no better place to in the fall than at an elementary school!

Now that the “back to school craziness” has slowed down, I would like to share with you our goals and focus for the year. Throughout the month, each of these goals will be shared with your children (in grades K-4) during what you will hear the children call “a meeting with the principal.” During these “meetings” I will explain each goal (in children’s terms) and also send each student home with their own briefcase. In that briefcase will be the tools for them to explain the goal to YOU. There will also be a “quiz” for you to fill out and return (in the briefcase) with your child. As each child brings back the completed “quiz”, they will get to put their name in a jar in my office, earning a chance to win a special treat! This new idea stems from research around the idea that children are more likely to strive for and reach their goals when they are a part of the process of setting them, being reminded (ongoing) of them, and sharing their progress and results with others.

Another “new thing” that is back at Cohocton is a modified Morning Program. This will be our venue to practice our behavior expectations and share the progress we are making toward our goals. As the whole school enters the building at 8:50 am they go straight to the gym and sit with their classes. During the next 20 minutes we sing, dance, practice our pledges,
celebrate birthdays and share any news about our progress towards our goals. We also recognize grade levels and individuals who were caught being responsible, respectful, cooperative, safe and kind and end the week on Friday with action packed “Minute to Win It” challenges! If you are able, please come and join in the Morning Program! After all, it’s a pleasant way to start your day and see how we, as a community are progressing with our goals!

Attached are our building and grade level goals for K-4. Please read through them and look forward to your child coming home with his/her briefcase, ready to schedule a “meeting” with the most important link necessary to assisting our school with reaching these goals…YOU! As always, please do not hesitate to contact me at 384-5234 or email me at kmurray@wccsk12.org with any questions, comments or concerns! Looking forward to seeing you all at “Open House” on Thursday, October 7th from 5:30pm-7pm! More information to follow…

Warmly,

Mrs. Murray
