This handbook is designed to highlight important items related to having your
daughter playing in the Wayland-Cohocton Softball program. If you have questions
about when to bring up an issue, how to help your daughter adjust to their role
on the team, or just want to know more about how we choose to run the program,
we hope this handbook will give you the answers. At any time during the course
of the season, if a situation arises that isn't in this handbook, please let us
know and we will help you the best that we can.
Playing on a sports team can be very rewarding experience. It can also be a
frustrating experience for a young player. Your positive support of your
daughter, the coaches, and the team can help during frustrating times. As with
any sport, the season will be filled with many ups and downs. Your steady and
unconditional support will prove very valuable as the year progresses.
We want you to take great pride in your team and school. Challenge every
endeavor with great enthusiasm, energy and conviction. Make your high school
experience one of fine art, not common task.
Your top priority is academics, with softball a close second. Outside
activities and social life are a distant third. It is important that your life
revolves around your education and softball, but it is also important that these
two priorities are not your entire life.
We must learn to discipline ourselves (as a team) so the coaching staff won’t
have to. We must also never mistake our coaches compassion and caring for
weakness. The coaches will always hold us accountable to “DO THE RIGHT THING.”
Thanks and we hope to have a great season.

Be positive and supportive without adding undue pressure and unrealistic
expectations.
-
Encourage your daughter to communicate concerns to the coach.

Eligibility Requirements for Athletes
Academic Policy
In order to participate in any extra-curricular activity, a student must be
encouraged to earn and maintain passing grades in her academic program of
studies. At the end of each 5-week period, students who are failing one class
will be allowed to practice and participate if they stay for assistance 13th
period. Students failing or receiving incomplete in two classes will be on
probation and will be allowed to practice, providing they stay for assistance
13th period: However, they will not be allowed to participate
in any competitions or scrimmages for a minimum of one week. After one week it
will be a teacher’s prerogative to release a student from the failing list
contingent upon a passing grade. The teacher will notify the coach and the high
school office. Students must make arrangements with teacher(s) to stay a minimum
of two nights per week unless legally excused from school. The staff to
communicate practice and participation privileges to the activity supervisor
will use green passes. If a student does not stay for 13th period assistance,
she will not be able to practice or participate in competitions.
If a student receives a failing or incomplete grade in three or more subjects,
she will be ineligible to practice and participate in any activity for a minimum
of two weeks. Students must make arrangements with teacher(s) to stay 13th
period at least four nights per week unless legally excused from school. After
two weeks, it will be a teacher’s prerogative to release a student from the
ineligibility list contingent upon a passing grade. The teacher will notify the
coach and the high school office.
Attendance Policy
Students are required to attend all classes during the
school day in order to participate in extracurricular activities after school.
The exception is made for a bona fide appointment such as dentist, doctor,
court, or college visitation accompanied by an appropriate excuse.
1. Absence: If a student is illegally absent, truant,
suspended in or out of school, or excused from any other part of the school day
to illness, she may not participate in extra curricular activities that day.
2. Tardy: A student, who is late to school, is considered tardy. She will sign
in at the attendance office. She will then report to the high school office to
get permission to participate that day. The Dean of Students will check to see
if attendance has been a previous problem. If it is not a recurring problem,
permission to participate will be granted. If tardiness has been a problem, the
student will not be allowed to participate that day and a suspension of the next
scheduled activity may occur. Students who are tardy to school and do not report
to the high school office will not participate in that day's activity, student
must be in school by 9:30am, unless they have a legal excuse as determined by
the attendance officer.
3. Absence following Extra Curricular Activities: Each student must make every
effort to be in school the day following an extracurricular activity. If a
pattern of absences develops following an extracurricular activity, the coach
will take appropriate disciplinary action. If absences after an extracurricular
activity have been a problem, participation in the next scheduled activity may
be suspended.
Drug and Alcohol
Policy
Any student in possession of ** using, or distributing
(selling) any controlled substance (drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco,
steroids) will be subject to discipline under this policy. The District reserves
the right to determine an appropriate penalty. (See determination of
consequences section) The following will be generally applicable.
1. A first policy violation will result in student being
ineligible to participate for ten (10) school weeks. However, students will
still be eligible to practice.
2. A second violation of the policy, the student will be ineligible to
practice/participate for twenty (20) school weeks.
3. A third violation of the policy, the student will be suspended from all
extra-curricular activities for a period of forty (40) school weeks, with no
chance of lessening the period of the suspension. Any subsequent violations will
also result in a 40-week suspension.
At the discretion of the District the period of suspension
may be lessened only in a first or second offense situation and then only if the
student verifies that she has pursued an evaluation and follows the recommended
treatment with a New York State certified substance abuse counselor or agency.
In the discretion of the District this may lessen the period of suspension by no
more than half of the weeks of suspension. The student and/or parents should
speak with the Athletic Director/Dean of Students to obtain an appropriate
referral for counseling.
** Possession includes knowingly being in the presence of
and/or in close proximity to and/or actual control of a controlled substance as
defined above
Behavior and Conduct
of Participants:
Good community citizenship is required of all participants of
extra-curricular activities. Good community citizenship involves following a
high standard of behavior and conduct while in or out of the school setting.
Students are expected to follow all laws, school and government regulations. Any
student who is arrested or receives an appearance ticket from a law enforcement
officer must report that incident immediately to her coach or the Athletic
Director/Dean of Students. Failure to do so will constitute a violation of this
policy. Any student who is arrested or receives an appearance ticket by police
may be suspended from all extra-curricular activities until the Athletic
Director/Dean of Students can investigate the infraction and a decision made on
further participation. In addition, extra-curricular participants who have been
found to violate the law and/or violate the school’s disciplinary code will be
subject to consequences under this policy as determined by the Athletic
Director/Dean of Students.
Foul language will never be tolerated during any team or
school activity. This includes games, practices, weight room, buses, etc. Learn
self-control.
Attending Parties:
Students are prohibited from being present at any party
where minors are illegally consuming drugs and/or alcohol. Remaining “present”
means the student becomes aware or reasonably should have been aware, that
alcohol or drugs were being consumed and that she failed to leave the party. If
a violation is verified, the student will be subject to a seven (7)-calendar day
suspension from the activity for the first incident. Subsequent violations and
the resulting penalties will be subject to the District’s discretion based upon
the circumstances.
Participation on the Team
-
It's a privilege, not a right.
- Players must accept all responsibilities in order to stay on the team.
- Nobody will be accorded equal or guaranteed playing time. Playing
time will be determined by ability, effort on a daily basis, and attitude.
- Intensity and Focus
- "Practice the way you play!"
- Everyone is expected to be at every practice.
a. If there is any reason why you need to miss practice you need to contact
the coach before practice.
b. If a practice is missed that is unexcused, a one game suspension will be
served. Two unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the team.
- Practice time is to be spent on softball.
a. You need to come to practice ready to better yourself and the team.
b. Practice runs for approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours and will be spent on
improving skills.
c. The field and the gym is the athlete's classroom and should be free of
distractions.5
- . You need to come daily prepared.
a. Batting Gloves

- Everyone will help take care of equipment before and after practices and
games.

- If needed, braid your hair for all games and practices.
- Bus rides to events are to be quiet!
- You need to concentrate on the game and think about your job in making
the team successful.

- Respect the bus driver and the job they have in front of them.
- Make sure the bus is spotless and the windows are up when exiting the

c. Set an example both on and off the playing area.
d. Be a living example of sound personal values and good sportsmanship.
e. Give 100% at all times. Hustle always!
f. Respect and accept the decisions of the coaching staff. When a player
questions a decision, that player should direct any concerns to the coach in
private. Never demonstrate a negative attitude in public.
g. Always prefer team victory rather than personal glory!
- If you are to leave with your parents you need to have written permission
slip signed by your parent. Players will not be allowed to ride home with
other students or boyfriends.
- If you need to address one of the coaches please contact the coach the
next day, not immediately after the game.
- Each athlete needs to return the health card to the coach as soon as
possible.
- Each team member needs a medical examination before practicing.
- Players should report all injuries to the coach.
- If any injury is serious enough to call an ambulance, be referred to the
Emergency Room or Physician or cause the athlete to miss a practice session
or game, then the player should fill out an accident report in the Health
Office as soon as possible.
- Once the Emergency Room staff or Physician has seen the athlete, a written
permission to resume practice or competition must be furnished to the Health
Office or to the coach.
- Only the coach should administer appropriate First Aid, if a doctor,
trainer or ambulance squad is not present.
It must be understood that no amount of instruction,
precaution, or supervision will totally eliminate all risk of injury. Just as in non-school sporting
activities, athletic participation by students also may be inherently dangerous.
Students and parents must assess the risks involved in such
participation. Each makes her choice to participate or
to allow the child to participate in spite of the risks. The obligation of parents and students
in making this choice cannot be overstated. In granting permission for your child to
participate in athletic competition, you, the parent, acknowledge and assume
such risks. Severe head or neck
injury, including paralysis or death may occur despite using a helmet provided
your child. No helmet can prevent
all head injuries or any neck injuries a player might receive while
participating in softball.

Southern Trip
This has been an annual trip depending heavily on our
fundraising activities. This
year we will be arriving in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina April 12th and
staying at the Ocean Reef Resort. The phone number of the Ocean Reef
Resort is 1 843 449 4441 if you would like to stay at the same location. During our stay we will be playing in
the Myrtle Beach Grand Stand Softball Tournament at Pepper Geddings
Complex or the Air Force Base.
The tournament runs Monday through Friday.
Before we leave it is very important that we have two
documents signed and returned to your coach before the trip. We would like to have an emergency phone
list filled out and a waiver form signed giving consent to participate in
the trip.
Off-Season Opportunities and Involvement
As time has gone on, players and teams are getting stronger, faster and
better skilled. It is impossible task in the short
amount of practices that teams have during the actual softball season to
have players reach their potentials.
The Wayland-Cohocton Softball program has several opportunities in the
off-season for players to improve strength and skills.
Player involvement in these off-season events will only make them
better. All of the clinics, camps, and summer
opportunities are updated as soon as we receive the information. It is posted on the Wayland-Cohocton
Softball web page.
