WAYLAND-COHOCTON HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION SYLLIBUS

CLASS PROCEDURES

·         Be on time.

·         Proper dress – shorts, t-shirt and sneakers (cold weather - sweatshirt and sweatpants).

·         No jewelry or hats.

·         No food or drink in Fieldhouse or locker-rooms.

·         Lockers to be locked at all times.

·         Be responsible for your belongings.

·         Injuries must be reported to teacher at the time it happens.

·         Must remain in Fieldhouse until the period ends.

ATTENDANCE

·         Physical Education is a half year credit bearing course. More than 12 absences will result in no credit.

·         It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time when they can make up absences.

 

GRADING

Every 5 week marking period will be worth 50 pts.

The points will be awarded as follows:

10 pts. (20%) = Knowledge (written quiz)

20 pts. (40%) = Performance (grading rubric)

20 pts. (40%) = Participation (in class, proper attire and effort)

 

PERFORMANCE GRADING RUBRIC

RUBRIC:        5 = PROFICIENCY; 4 = COMPETENCY; 3 = NOVICE;

2 = BEGINNER; 1 = DOES NOTHING

 

APPLICATION OF SKILLS

5 = USES FOUR OR MORE LEGAL SKILLS EFFECTIVELY & CONSISTENTLY.

4 = USES THREE LEGAL SKILLS EFFECTIVELY.

3 = USES TWO LEGAL SKILLS EFFECTIVELY.

2 = USES FEWER THAN TWO LEGAL SKILLS.

1 = DOES NOTHING.

 

APPLICATION OF STRATEGY

5 = SHOWS ANTICIPATION AND TACTICAL AWARENESS BY ASSUMING APPROPRIATE COURT/FIELD AND BODY POSITION. CAN ASSUME DIFFERENT ROLES AS PLAY REQUIRES.

4 = MOVES INTO APPROPRIATEPOSITION BUT IS SLOW TO REACT, SELECTS APPROPRIATE SKILL.

3 = ATTEMPTS APPROPRIATE SKILL AND PLAYS IN GENERALLY CORRECT POSITION BUT IS NOT STRATEGICALLY EFFECTIVE.

2 = CAN EXPLAIN CONCEPTS OF BASIC STRATEGIES, BUT MOVEMENT IS INCONSISTENT AND/OR INAPPROPRIATE.

1 = DOES NOTHING.

 

APPLICATION OF RULES & ETIQUETTE

5 = DEMONSTRATES A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE RULES, ETIQUETTE & CONVENTIONS OF PLAY & CAN APPLY THEM QUICKLY, CORRECTLY & CONSISTENTLY IN THE GAME & CAN SCORE THE GAME CORRECTLY & CONFIDENTLY.

4 = HAS A GOOD WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF THE RULES, ETIQUETTE & CONVENTIONS OF THE GAME, & CAN APPLY THEM MOST OF THE TIME.

3 = SHOWS A GRASP OF MAJOR RULES, ETIQUETTE & CONVENTIONS, & CAN SOMETIMES APPLY THEM WITHOUT HELP.

2 = SHOWS A GRASP OF THE MAJOR RULES, ETIQUETTE & CONVENTIONS, BUT USUALLY NEEDS HELP TO PLAY THE GAME.

NOTE : THESE RUBRICS ARE BASED ON THE RUBRICS PRESENTED IN THE 1997 & 1998 GOALS 2000 WORKSHOPS (PERSONAL & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY(HELLISON,1995), SKILL PROFICIENCY (GRAHAM,HOLT-HALE & PARKER,1993),AND GAME STAGES (RINK,1998)).

 

ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES

Team and Individual Sports

  • Exhibit competency in team and individual sports.
  • Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.
  • Connect the importance of skill development and successful game play.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge rules and strategies.

Movement Preparation

  • Participate in movement preparation with dynamic stretches.
  • Injury prevention.

Flexibility

·         Increase flexibility through static passive stretches.

 

MEDICAL MAKE-UP POLICY

If a student is medically excused from class (no activity), but in class, for less

than one (1) week, the student will be given five (5) days from returning to class

to make–up the classes missed. It is the responsibility of the student to approach

the teacher to make-up the class. The student will also be required to keep a  

daily written journal for each class missed. The journal is to include all  

instruction, skill development and activities. The journal is to be given to the  

teacher at the end of each class.

If a student is medically excused from class (no activity), but in class, for more

If the student is medically excused for more than two (2) weeks, the student will

be required to write a paper on the unit of instruction missed. The paper shall be

the activities origin and rules.

If a student is legally absent from class (suspension, etc…), for more than one

(1) week, the student will be required to write a paper on the unit of instruction

missed. The paper shall be at least two (2) pages in length, double-spaced typed
