How to help your child study for a test

Whenever an upcoming test is announced, follow these steps to help get your child off to a good start.

1.     Determine what the test will cover and organize all student materials.

Help your child find out exactly what material a test will cover: chapters in a textbook, class notes, homework assignments, etc.  Make sure they are available for study.

2.     Schedule time for studying ahead of time.

Don’t allow your child to wait until the last minute to study.  Break down study tasks throughout the week.  It is better to study a little bit each day than to cram the night before a test.

3.     Use effective study techniques.

Ø    As your child studies, he should write important information on index cards.  Later, these cards can be used to review for the test.

Ø    Review homework and class notes.  It is helpful to underline or highlight important points.

Ø    Review study questions, past quizzes and tests.  Also, make sure your child reviews study questions in the textbook, which provide an excellent review of material covered.
