Curriculum Maps and Overviews

  Return to Main Page

Over the past several years, WCCS has been committed to the serious work of mapping out our core curriculum for grades K-12.  Curriculum mapping is an important part of our District’s effort to articulate expectations and raise student achievement.

These maps are written collaboratively to provide a common, coherent, and specific document to not only match the New York State Learning Standards, but also define what the district believes are the essential components of each grade level and course.  Each map is designed to state what we want students to know (content) and be able to do (skills).  It guarantees that all students will receive the same learning experiences and outcomes no matter which teacher they are assigned to.

Elements of a Curriculum Map

Each map serves as a teaching tool, providing a variety of important information.  Maps are organized by the following categories:

Unit – topic to be discussed, learned and mastered

Essential Questions – overarching ideas in the form of questions that provide focus and “hook” students in the process of learning

Content – define what knowledge students should be able to know at the end of the unit

Skills – define what students should be able to do at the end of the unit

Standards and Performance Indicators – statements that represent the collective articulation of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that students will posses at different stages of education

Vocabulary – key words associated with a unit all students will master

Assessment – required common assessments to document student learning at the end of each unit of study
