Thinking About
Your Senior Essay:
Your Purpose
To inform your audience about a contemporary social issue and
use persuasion techniques to make an argument about that issue.
In doing so, you should clearly state a thesis at the end of the
introduction paragraph and restate it in the conclusion.
Your Audience
Your classmates, teacher, and other members of the academic
community.
Your Subject
May be chosen from the list of topics or you may propose your
own.
Your Self
You should write in a formal, academic tone, but you may combine fact and
opinion (as long as it is supported by fact) and you may use personal pronouns
like “we,” “us,” and “our” if needed to establish a personal bond with the
readers (pathos). You still should not
use “I.”
