PROCEDURES

Pre-K - 1st Grades

The privilege of borrowing is coupled with learning responsibility for good care. Students will be “forgiven” one lost or damaged book for the duration of their stay at Wayland Elementary. If a second book is lost or damaged, the student will be responsible for the replacement cost of that book. They will not be able to check out books until it is paid for. Library books can be kept for one week.  If the book becomes overdue, the student is restricted from checking out another book until the overdue one is returned. Three notices will be sent home with the student. After these notices, a letter will be mailed home.

2nd - 4th Grades

How many books they may select: Your child may take out two library books at a time along with an Accelerated Reader book.  (Accelerated Reader books are library books that have a reading comprehension test the students take once they are done reading the book.) We encourage students to select a book at their reading level.  Once they have chosen a book they can read, they may select a book of their choice. We also encourage students to read a variety of genres, such as fiction, fairy tales, nonfiction, biographies, etc. There will be times when your child is allowed extra books in order to complete a classroom or a library assignment.

When might students choose books? They will have library once a week and there will be time for them to select their books during class.  The library is open  anytime during the school day and they may visit the library to exchange or renew their books at their teachers discretion.  Books can be kept for 2 week.

General book care reminder

Please keep library books in a safe place. Keep away from younger children, food and drinks (especially juice boxes) and pets. If the book is damaged, PLEASE do not try to repair at home. When possible, we will repair the book.

Overdue, damaged and lost books

When a student has an overdue, damaged or lost book they are not allowed to check out books.  Books needed for an assignment may be taken to their classroom or used in the library. Three overdue notices will be sent home with the student. After three notices, letters will be mailed home. Students will be “forgiven” one lost or damaged book for the duration of their stay in the Elementary buildings.  If a second book is lost or damaged, the student will be responsible for the replacement cost of that book.  They will not be able to check out books until it is paid for. If a lost book is paid for then found, we will refund the money.
