September 2011

Dear Parents:

I am very excited to start a new “musical” year with your children.  Your student’s chorus time will either be 5th or 6th period, opposite their lunch.  Half of the chorus students come 5th period…the other half come 6th period.  This year we will be singing songs with a variety of musical styles.  We often include sign language, movement and musical instruments to our performances.  We will also be working on the basics of musicianship (reading music, dynamics, expression, etc.)  Students do not receive number grades for chorus, but receive Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement, Unsatisfactory. The bulk of the grade is participation and appropriate behavior in the classroom.

            Concert Attire:                   Same dress code

 Concert Requirements

Attendance at concerts is required for all chorus members.  Unless there is some unforeseen emergency or illness, attendance is mandatory.  Concerts are an accumulation of all we do in class.  They are special occasions.  When one person misses a concert it can really affect the entire ensemble. Missing a concert is similar to missing an important test in a class; if you miss a test because you are sick or cannot be in school, you make-up the test.   You cannot “make-up” the concert as such, but need to do a project to receive a grade for the concert.  Students need a written note or phone call/e-mail from parents about reason for missing concert.  Project details will be handed out after the missed concert.  Students will not receive a grade for missed concert, unless they complete the project.
