Bullying &
Cyber-Bullying
Why is cyber-bullying different from normal
bullying?
-
Nature of
bullying can be much more intense.
-
Typically
computer/internet access is in the home, a place that should be a
refuge.
-
Anonymity: It is much easier to be mean from a distance when the
face-to-face impact of your actions are removed.
Effects of Bullying
-
Change in
grades
-
Low
self-esteem
-
Change in
interests
-
Depression
According to I-Safe America:
-
42% of
4th and 8th graders have been bullied online.
-
53%
report actually engaging in online aggression toward others.
-
42% of
parents do not review online content children are sending/viewing.
-
58% of
kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them online.
If you
are concerned your child may be a victim of, or involved with bullying,
cyber-bullying or other forms of aggression, do not hesitate to ask for
help. School counselors, principals and personnel are available to
assist you (see school contact links)
