During the 1860’s, local heroes from the Wayland-Cohocton area participated in the Civil War. Soldiers and local town’s people made many sacrifices. These soldiers traveled to many different places in the United States during this war.

I take this opportunity to drop you a few lines to let you now that I am well and enjoying life and hope this may find you the same.
200 are at the above named place 5 miles from the city and about 7 or 8 miles from the enemy. Gen McDowell defeat has not discouraged us. There is fresh troops coming in every day the government is building a large fort about 50 rods from our camp we have a good place to sleep and plenty to eat nor expect have another battle soon
