The Way They Were
There
was a time when students could choose the type of graduation diploma they
wished to pursue. Local diploma candidates would take the minimum competency
tests in the core subject areas while Regents diploma candidates would take the
challenging Regents Exams.
However,
the Board of Regents and the State Education Department have revised Part 100
of the Commissioner’s Regulations. This is the first major revision of Part 100
since the adoption of the Regents Action Plan in the mid-1980’s.
The
new revisions to Part 100 include an increase in the total number of credits
for graduation, an increase in the required amount of study in mathematics and
science, Regents examination testing for all students, and a requirement of
proficiency in a second language. The local diploma is being phased out.
Beginning with the class entering grade 9 in 2001, all students must take and pass a
minimum of five Regents examinations to earn a diploma.

The Implementation
Students
in grades k-12 across New York State are striving to reach the new, higher
standards. Beginning in kindergarten, valuable skills are being taught that
will aid students throughout their entire educational program. The WCCS
administration has responded to the new standards with increased staff
development. Teachers are aligning curriculum and providing students with
challenging educational experiences to help them meet the rigorous testing that
comes with the new standards. The State has already begun the administration of
the new exams.
Your
child will face the first of many major examinations during fourth grade.

When Students Struggle
The
State requires all students who score below a minimum reference point to receive
additional help and requires some of them to be retested.
Retesting will occur after the student receives Academic Intervention Services
(AIS). WCCS is preparing an Academic Intervention Services plan that will
outline the types of services we will provide for students. AIS may include longer
time in a course, summer school, tutoring, pull out or push in remediation
programs, or guidance and counseling to address barriers to academic
performance.
