Wayland Elementary recognized the 10th anniversary of 9/11 by encouraging children to become community heroes. Community heroes are people who take the time to help others and show kindness. For example, helping brothers and sisters with chores, giving someone a hug, helping neighbors with yard work, or simply doing what is expected of us without reminders.

Parents were asked to talk with their children about ways they could make a positive difference on 9/11. After completing an act of kindness, the students filled out a red, white or blue form showing their name, what they did and returned it to school. Those forms were used to create a large paper flag on the wall that now is a reminder to those who pass to remember it only takes small acts to be a community hero.
