40 Week Course (2 Semesters) - 1 High School Credit

Prerequisites: English 9

40-week college preparatory course leading to a Regents diploma that furthers the study of the development, purpose and appreciation of literature. The study of literary elements as each applies to literature will culminate in a 5-7 page MLA documented independent research paper that will involve the use of several sources of literary merit. Students will practice research techniques that involve electronic and textual sources. Listening and speaking skills will be fostered through structured classroom discussions, interview techniques and both individual and group presentations. Students will practice listening, reading and writing skills in preparation for the Regents exam in 11th grade.

Accelerated English 10

40 Week Course (2 Semesters) - 1 High School Credit

Prerequisites: Accelerated English 9 or a teacher recommendation

English 10 Accelerated entails a broader study of literature over standard tenth grade English. In addition to the fundamental course overview of literature, grammar and composition, the accelerated course will involve several more novels during the course of the year (thereby increasing the pace of material covered) and more focused instruction leading to the Regents Comprehensive Examination in English in eleventh grade. Added readings in Shakespeare and contemporary literature will reinforce and supplement the students' preparation for the New York State exams. The study of literary elements as each applies to literature will culminate in a 5-7 page MLA documented independent research paper that will involve the use of several sources of literary merit. Students will practice research techniques that involve electronic and textual sources. This course is designed for the student seeking collegiate placement at an institution of higher learning following high school graduation. English 11 Accelerated will follow this course in grade 11. In grade 12, college-level English courses (College English 1 & College English 2) may be taken as an alternative to the standard English 12 courses offered in the senior year.
