“I hate it. I don’t want to stay on the bus for 45 minutes!” said Tyler Forrester, an 11th grader, regarding the change in bus routes.

The new school year brought a new bus ride for many students. All their lives they rode one bus, got used to one driver, and one group of kids.  But all that changed this year.  Both drivers and students have had to learn a whole new way to get to school.

“It made our bus ride longer.  They added half of the other run to ours. It changed the time kids get home,” stated Mrs. Howe, driver of Bus 90.

Due to the change in routes kids have been getting home later, which means less time for things students do outside of school and more time on the bus. Many students aren’t happy with the change and neither are their parents.

“Parents have sent in permission slips for their kids to walk home from someone else’s house,” said Howe.

But students are most concerned about how it will affect them.

“I’m going to get sick more because I have to walk home from the corner. I think since there’s so many more kids on the bus there’s going to be more germs spread,” said Jessica Heckman, a senior.

Mr. Whyte, High School Principal, said the school was concerned about the price of gas and taxes. “It’s better for the district,” said Mr. Whyte.

When asked about the chance of another change involving the bus routes, he said,

“We’re looking into some issues; there may be another bus run.”

Mr. Mastin, Business Manager for WCCS District, reasoned that the change is necessary because every year our enrollment has decreased and our district is huge compared to most in New York State.

“Something’s going to change every year” with the bus route, said Mr. Mastin.

Our buses drive over 600,000 miles a year, not including field trips or sports games, so gas plays a huge part in the change. When asked if there’s a chance for yet another change in the bus route, he said that they’ve made enough changes since September.
