Installation of the 2024 Timber Frame Class Project

Timber Frame Class on completed 2024 project

The Wayland-Cohocton STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Math) Timber Frame Class has been building a pavilion each year since 2016 when the first structure was built on the Wayland-Cohocton Campus. Since then, the class, taught by Rob Hughes, Jim McLaughlin and assisted on install day by Jacob Weiand has been designing and building the structures each year. Students in the class are juniors and seniors and spend the year planning and designing the structure based on the traditional timber frame principles. Students work in the shop and “beamery” to meet the requests of the participating organization. Each year, the class partners with a municipality or non-profit to fund the project. The first project materials were acquired through donations and then every subsequent project has been paid for by the partnering organization. Participating organizations provide the concrete pad and roofing materials and installation. All of the projects have been built in the school district borders except for one constructed at the Saunders Finger Lakes Museum in Branchport.

Projects have been built at the Cohocton Sports Complex, Atlanta Fire Department, Cohocton Village Square, Loon Lake Preservation Lands, Cohocton American Legion and the Wayland Historical Society Museum. This year’s installation is on Main Street, Wayland and will be used for public events. The class partnered with the Village of Wayland to build their largest project yet. Also working on the project Kevin Kilbourne, owner of Rogers and Tenbrook donated the boom truck and operator Anthony Mark; John Quinlan and Tom Hober also contributed toward the project..
