March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The goal is to help people understand and support those with Down syndrome better. The date being the 21st day of the 3rd month was chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. Throughout the week, the Inclusive Youth Leadership Club has been sponsoring awareness activities which culminate in recognizing World Down Syndrome Day on Friday, March 21st. Wayland-Cohocton students and staff alike are encouraged to wear yellow and blue, or crazy socks to recognize the day. Want to know more, go to: World Down Syndrome #WorldDownSyndromeDay Here are some interesting facts being shared daily in the High School daily this week: People with Down Syndrome are born with an extra copy of Chromosome 21, giving them a total of 47 chromosomes. While the exact cause is not fully understood, it is known that the extra chromosome is usually present in nearly all of the trillions of cells in their bodies. There are three types of Down Syndrome: Trisomy 21/Nondisjunction (most common), Translocation (3%), and Mosaic (2%). Down Syndrome is not new. In fact, the first evidence of its existence dates back 2,500 years. The facial features associated with Down Syndrome can be seen in some ancient pottery and paintings. Doctors use maternal blood samples and ultrasounds to detect DS in the early stages of pregnancy. Studies on the impact of Down Syndrome on families show that 96% of parents do not regret having a child with Down Syndrome, while 96% of siblings would not trade their sibling with Down Syndrome for one without it. Additionally, 99% of people with Down Syndrome say they are happy with their lives.
