In pursuit of her Seal of Civic Readiness, WC student Olivia Schecter is dedicating her efforts to animal welfare. Her project seeks to highlight the pressing issues of underfunding and inadequate support for animal shelters, as well as the alarming problems associated with kill shelters and puppy mills. To get this project underway, Olivia has launched a pet donation drive. Any donations to the cause would be immensely beneficial to these shelters! Anything can help, including paper towels, cat litter, blankets, toys, cleaning supplies, and more! Gently used products (besides unsealed food and treats, litter, and toys) are welcome as well. Dropoff boxes can be found in the WCCS Elementary, Middle, and High School offices, as well as Quinlan's Pharmacy.

Mother Nature hasn’t quite gotten on board with spring yet, so the Easter Egg Hunt scheduled on Saturday, April 12th has been moved to the Wayland-Cohocton Prekindergarten School gymnasium. Emma! A Pop Musical is a jukebox musical based on Jane Austen's novel Emma. The musical is set in a modern prep school and features hit songs by female artists. Emma, a senior at Highbury Prep, is certain she knows what’s best for her classmates’ love lives, and is determined to find the perfect boyfriend for shy sophomore Harriet by the end of the school year. But will Emma’s relentless matchmaking get in the way of finding her own happiness? Based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, this sparkling new musical features the hit songs of legendary girl groups and iconic female singers from The Supremes to Katy Perry.
Save the Date: The Cohocton Sports Booster Club, Wayland-Cohocton PTSO and the Cohocton Library are sponsoring the return of the Cohocton Easter Egg Hunt! With staggered times and an adapted event, this is sure to be a fun family day on Saturday, April 12th. Also, Keep an eye out for information about the longstanding St. Jude Benefit Bike-a-Thon that will be held on Saturday, June 7th. Cohocton Sports Booster is looking forward to making it a grand event!

Wayland-Cohocton is celebrating Autism Awareness Week, this week, March 31st to April 4th. Awareness activities have been developed by the student Inclusive Youth Leadership Club. There are bracelets for sale for $5 in the school office, which are expected to arrive on Friday. All proceeds will be donated to AutismUp in Rochester. Students are creating posters with information about Autism encouraging acceptance and inclusion. Wednesday, April 2 everyone is encouraged to wear light blue or other Autism Awareness attire. Wednesday, April 2 recognises World Autism Day.

March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The goal is to help people understand and support those with Down syndrome better. The date being the 21st day of the 3rd month was chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. Throughout the week, the Inclusive Youth Leadership Club has been sponsoring awareness activities which culminate in recognizing World Down Syndrome Day on Friday, March 21st. How does Down Syndrome occur? Most people have a total of 46 chromosomes, but those with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome, bringing the total to 47.
Down Syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition diagnosed in the United States. Approximately 6,000 babies — or one in 700 — are born with Down Syndrome each year.
Down Syndrome is not considered hereditary, since only 1% of cases show the condition passing from parent to child.
Although Down Syndrome was first described in 1866, the chromosomal cause was not identified until 1959.
Approximately one in every 775 babies in the United States is born with Down Syndrome.

Due to today's unexpected closure, the 6th grade Wax Museum student presentations have been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 18, from 12:20 to 1:00 PM. Parents, please remember to bring a photo ID for check-in upon arrival. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday for the second round of presentations. Please know that the student presentations occur simultaneously throughout the PAC seating area (students are not performing on stage). Families are welcome to walk around and enjoy multiple presentations at their leisure. Have a wonderful weekend!
Due to today's (Friday, March 14th) mechanical issues and subsequent closing, the 7th and 8th grade Shamrock Shuffle dance will be rescheduled. Once a new date is finalized with the DJ, we will share that information. We are disappointed about the delay but look forward to the Shamrock Shuffle occurring sometime this spring.
