The third grade has been working with clay and recently completed clay plate projects they will be bringing home this week. These beautiful plates are food-safe and can be placed in the microwave or oven. Ms. Stieve does recommend hand washing but hopes her students and families enjoy the incredibly useful works of art! This is National Youth Art Month!

March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The goal is to help people understand and support those with Down syndrome better. The date being the 21st day of the 3rd month was chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. Throughout the week, the Inclusive Youth Leadership Club has been sponsoring awareness activities which culminate in recognizing World Down Syndrome Day on Friday, March 21st. Wayland-Cohocton students and staff alike are encouraged to wear yellow and blue, or crazy socks to recognize the day. Want to know more, go to: World Down Syndrome #WorldDownSyndromeDay
Here are some interesting facts being shared daily at announcements in the Elementary School this week:
People with Down Syndrome can go to regular schools, make friends, enjoy life, and get jobs when they are older.
How does Down Syndrome occur? Most people have a total of 46 chromosomes, but those with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome, bringing the total to 47.
What is a chromosome? Chromosomes determine your physical traits, such as eye color and hair color.
Down Syndrome was named after Dr. John Langdon Down, who wrote a paper about it nearly 160 years ago!
More than 400,000 people are living with Down Syndrome in the United States.
