Children playing with blocks on the floor at the YMCA Before and After-School ProgramDecember 18th, 2023 - At its most recent Board of Education meeting, the WCCS District ratified an agreement with the Hornell YMCA that makes the Before and After-School Childcare Program more affordable for Wayland-Cohocton families. Discussions between the District and the YMCA began after increased rates were announced for the 2023-2024 school year, including a new membership fee. These changes made it difficult for local families to afford the program. The result was decreased enrollment, which also jeopardized the program continuing at Wayland-Cohocton.

“We are pleased to announce that this is a two year commitment by the District and the YMCA, which will hopefully increase the enrollment in the program,” said Dr. Eileen Feinman, Superintendent. “By making the program affordable, it also makes it more accessible, and increasing participation will ensure that the program remains in the District.” This two year agreement will also provide the District and the YMCA time to seek out additional grant opportunities to affordably extend the program beyond the two years.”

As a result of these combined efforts, the program is now offered to families with no program membership fee requirement. In addition, the rates will now be as follows:

Wayland Before-School Program (7 a.m. to school arrival):

  • Three-Day Program: $37.50/week

  • Five-Day Program: $60/week

Wayland After-School Program (school dismissal to 6 p.m.):

  • Three-Day Program: $67.50/week

  • Five-Day Program: $90/week

The YMCA believes the Before and After School Program should provide opportunities and experiences which stimulate a child's physical, social, intellectual and emotional development. Examples include, gym activities, games, arts and crafts, movies, books and a nutritional snack. The YMCA believes the program should work in cooperation with other area institutions including schools, churches, social service agencies, etc., when possible.

Currently enrolled families should see a refund of the membership fee as well as a decrease in weekly rates occurring within the next few weeks. Families interested in signing up should contact WC Elementary Secretary Sandy Schmidt at sschmidt@wccsk12.org or (585) 728-3547 for applications.  CLICK HERE for the YMCA Daycare webpage or copy and paste this link into your browser: https://www.wccsk12.org/page/ymca-childcare.
