WAYLAND, N.Y. — Wayland-Cohocton Central School’s American Military History class is once again paying tribute to America’s veterans in honor of Veterans Day. This November, students will create a Field of Flags in front of the Middle School to recognize the service and sacrifice of American servicemen and women—past, present, and future.
The number of flags displayed will be determined by the total amount raised for Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering veterans and their families. The class is currently accepting donations to support both the Field of Flags project and DAV’s mission.
Those wishing to contribute can donate directly at: https://support.dav.org/participants/wccs-american-military-history
DAV provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations, assisting more than one million veterans each year through life-changing programs and services. In 2023 alone, DAV provided over 246,000 rides to medical appointments, helped file more than 209,000 benefits claims, and secured over $28.4 billion in earned benefits for veterans. All DAV services are provided at no cost to veterans, their families, and survivors.
Last year, the Wayland-Cohocton community helped students raise nearly $1,000 for DAV, a total the class hopes to exceed this year through continued local support.
From the frozen fields of Valley Forge to the sands of the Middle East, American service members have answered the call to defend freedom and uphold the ideals that define our nation. This project helps students connect the lessons of history to real lives and real sacrifices. The Field of Flags is both a tribute and a lesson—an opportunity for students to reflect on the courage and dedication of those who have served while giving back to those who continue to carry the torch of service.
The Wayland-Cohocton American Military History class expresses deep gratitude for the community’s ongoing support and invites all to visit the Field of Flags display this November.
