Wayland-Cohocton Central School’s American Military History Class aims to honor all American veterans this Veteran’s Day. This November WCCS American Military History students will build a field of flags in front of the middle school to honor all American fighting men and women; past, present, and future.
“The amount of flags that we receive in our field is determined by the amount of money that we raise for DAV(Disabled American Veterans),” said Mr. Flower, Military History Teacher. DAV is a nonprofit charity that provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations and their families, helping more than 1 million veterans in positive, life-changing ways each year. Last year, the organization provided more than 246,000 rides to veterans attending medical appointments and assisted in filing over 209,000 claims for benefits. In 2025, DAV-represented veterans received more than $33 billion in earned benefits. DAV’s services are offered at no cost to all generations of veterans, their families and survivors. Over the past two years we have raised close to $1,500.00 in our school community for this charity.
From the frozen fields of Valley Forge to the sands of the Middle East, American fighting men and women have stood as guardians of freedom, answering the call to defend the ideals that define our nation. From the mud in the trenches of World War I to the beaches of places like Normandy and Iwo Jima during World War II, American fighting men and women have defeated tyranny and protected liberty. Through the bitter winters of Korea and the jungles of Vietnam, American soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines endured unimaginable hardship to uphold the promise of freedom for others. During modern conflicts in the Middle East, American service members have faced new enemies and new challenges, carrying forward with the same courage and sense of duty.
