Veterans Day
Students in Mr. Austin Flower’s High School American Military History class at Wayland-Cohocton created a Field of Flags in honor of Veterans and Veterans Day. The display, located in the front yard of the Wayland campus, features flags that each represent a monetary donation made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and honor an individual veteran. Through this project, the students raised a total of $580 for the organization.

“It is our honor and duty to remember the sacrifices that so many service members have made for the freedoms we are privileged to enjoy every day in this country,” said Mr. Flower. “We are proud to create this Field of Flags as a small token of appreciation for all the sacrifices veterans have made to keep our nation protected and free.”

Students participating in the project include George Baverstock, Adrian Burr, Jacob Collins, Joshua Delafield, Ean Gaylord, Brennin George, and Joshua Stanley.

The class invites community members to visit the Field of Flags in the front yard, reflect on the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, and take a moment to remember those who have defended our freedoms. The students and Mr. Flower extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone in the community who contributed to this meaningful effort.

This month Wayland-Cohocton staff were given the opportunity to earn their CPR certification and Narcan administration education for free during two after-school training sessions. WC;s own Ms. Kelly Brittingham taught the CPR class as a certified instructor and each participant left with a safety mask for administering CPR. Connie Terry of the Steuben Prevention Coalition Opioid Committee trained the attending staff in the administration of Narcan to combat opioid overdose. Each attendee was presented with two doses of Narcan, gloves, and a safety mask. Training was organized by Director of Facilities and Safety Scott Manne.

Ag in the Classroom Educator Stephanie McKinley of Steuben County Cornell Cooperative Extension visited third graders where the hot topic was corn! Ms. McKinley read a book about how corn grows and all of the different types of corn and its uses. She brought along some samples of corn as well. The most fun however was playing in the oobleck - which is a cornstarch and water mixture that acts as a solid when force is applied and a liquid when it is left alone. Ms. McKinley also shared that she will be bringing updates to each visit about Lily, a young calf the Ag in the Classroom program has adopted. Ag in the Classroom connects agricultural learning to elementary classrooms through a partnership with the Steuben County Cornell Cooperative office.

The high school robotics team is in the thick of preparing for its competition in February. While the team formed last year thanks to the strong advocacy of its members, this will be the first year the team competes. The First Tech Challenge is the next step of the competition program created by FIRST Inspires and requires advanced engineering skills which truly stretch the learning of these highly motivated students. The group is eternally grateful to Mr. Paul Holubek whose vast knowledge of almost everything keeps the team moving forward.

The recipient of the High School Golden Eagle Award for the week of October 15th was Anakin York-Miller. Anakin volunteered to be the Eagle at the high school pep rally. He did a great job hyping up the crowd and getting the students excited for homecoming. Being up there in front of a field house full of students takes a lot of guts and its great that Anakin stepped up to the plate!

Each week, Wayland-Cohocton High School recognizes students for exhibiting characteristics such as empathy, kindness, perseverance, leadership, and for demonstrating characteristics of being a model student. Each week, the High School will share the outstanding efforts of a student or students who demonstrate these attributes.
